Date: Sat Jan 20, 2001 6:23pm Cynthia, I posted a message on the paxil message board and was referred to you by a woman named Patricia. A dear friend of mine was significantly depressed with 2-3 recent unreported suicide attempts and was put on paxil. He started on 10mg. On the fourth night (with little sleep due to the SE's) he became psychotic, went to his ex-girlfriends apartment and suggested she call the police. He orchestrated a scene when the police arrived where he was holding a kitchen knife with the hopes they would shoot him. He was not holding it to his girlfriend, just holding it and would not put it down. She realized what he was doing and yelled to the police that he was trying to get them to kill him (they call it suicide by blue). He was arrested, spent a month in jail and is now facing a trial and looking at some time. My friend of 11 years has always been non violent and gentle. He is extremely intelligent and had become quite depressed over the course of a year. I think his lawyer should make the jury aware of the possibility that he would not have acted in such a manner had he not taken paxil. I am a registered nurse and know from my patients (most of whom are multi diagnosed with HIV, Psych, or substance abusers) that paxil can cause some psychosis during initiation of therapy. Can you steer me in a direction to guide his lawyer to research or similar cases ? I would greatly appreciate the help. Patricia said you could contact Ann who might be able to help. Thanks for any insight, Kate Date: Sat Jan 20, 2001 6:27pm Response1: Kate, I will give you the name of some Attorneys and I also will give you ann tracy's phone no. she is great and can help, this is so typical of these drugs, I also will contact you later today, I am going to run the kids to cheer camp but will be back later, ann tracy has testified in a few cases, I also will get you in touch with Peter Breggin he is a Dr. and has been on oprah etc..... Also, the lawyer who is handling the Paxil lawsuit might be a good contact. His name is Don Farber and his e-mail address is: N3DGT@a.... What happened to your friend is not so out of the ordinary -- these drugs can have dastardly effects on your mind. Please keep us posted on what you find out. It is important to let everyone know what these drugs can do. Best of luck, Trisha
